DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

(Semester Pattern implemented during 1978-79)
The course for the Diploma in Engineering in any branch extends over a period of three years.

SPAN OF SEMESTER

I Year : I Semester July to November
II Semester December to April
II Year : III Semester June to November
IV Semester December to April
III Year : V Semester June to November
VI Semester December to April

Each semester will be of a 16 week duration.

PATTERN OF THE COURSE

I Year : Basic Engineering (Common to all branches )
Semester Pattern – I & II Semesters.
II Year : Semester Pattern – III & IV Semesters
III Year : Semester Pattern – V & VI Semesters

CONDITIONS FOR CONTINUING THE COURSE

Under the modified regulations :

i) Students who join the full-time Diploma Course, will normally complete the course of study in three consecutive academic years without break (Two consecutive academic years in case of H.S.C.
Academic / Vocational & ITI students admitted in II year)

ii) However, Students will be permitted to proceed to the next semester irrespective of their failure in the preceding semester / I year examination.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

Given separately in the Annexure

The examinations shall be conducted at the end of every semester of the Diploma course by the State Board of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu.

A fee of Rs. 150/- for Diploma Certificate, Rs. 75/- for provisional Certificate and a fee of Rs. 60/- for consolidated mark list are being collected along with VI Semester examination fees from the final year

ELIGIBILITY FOR APPEARING FOR THE BOARD EXAMINATION

  • The candidates must have put in a minimum of 80% of attendance
    in the I year / Semester concerned.
  • Should have earned a satisfactory progress certificate in studies from the Head of the institution.
  • Have to satisfactorily complete the course of study prescribed by the State Board of Technical Education.
  • Should be in possession of satisfactory conduct and character.
  • Have to register and remit the prescribed examination fees.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE AWARD OF DIPLOMA

A student will be eligible for the award of Diploma only after undergoing the prescribed course of study for a period of not less than three academic years (two years in the case of H.S.C. Academic/Vocational & ITI students admitted in II year and four years for part-time students) in this institution affiliated to the State Board of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu and passed the prescribed examinations.

PROCEDURE FOR COMPLETION OF THE COURSE

i) The candidate on completion of each semester/year should necessarily register himself/herself for all the subjects of the current examination as well as for all the arrear subjects of all the previous Semester/Year Examinations and shall appear for the Board Examinations in that Semester/Year.

ii) A Candidate will not be permitted to proceed to the next higher semester / course of study unless he/she has registered himself/ herself and appeared for the Board examinations as stipulated in clause (i) above. If a candidate fails to satisfy the attendance regulations in any semester/year he/she has to reappear for Board Examinations as per the above rule. However, such candidates can be permitted to appear for all the arrear subjects by registering for all the arrear papers.

iii) A student having shortage of attendance in a semester should repeat the same semester in the next academic year. Similarly a student who had not attended atleast a single paper (theory or practical) of a particular semester examination, cannot continue his/her studies in the next semester, even if he/she had enough attendance in that semester with usual conditions.

iv) Candidates will not be permitted to continue the course of study and write the examinations, if there is a break of study for more than five years during any part of their course of study. However, those candidates for whom continuous break in the study is less than five years, prior permission of the Chairman, Board of Examinations is necessary to continue the course and write the examinations.

The maximum time limit permitted for the completion of the Diploma course is as follows:

For regular students admitted in I year – 6 Years
For H.S.C. Academic/Vocational/ITI Students admitted in III Semester – 5 Years
For Part Time Students admitted in I Year – 7 Years

FIRST CLASS WITH HONOURS

It is awarded to candidates who secure an aggregate of 75% marks and above in III, IV, V & VI Semesters put together (All to be cleared in the first attempt). Further, candidates eligible for the above classification should not have arrears in the I year subjects at the end of VI Semester (III Year) and should complete III, IV, V & VI Semester within a period of two continuous years and should complete the entire course within the stipulated period of study of 3 Years without any break.

CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

Classification of candidates who pass out final examination from April 2003 onwards (joined in first year in 2000 – 2001) is being done as specified below:

I) FIRST CLASS WITH HONOURS :

A candidate will be declared to have passed in First Class with Honours if he/she secures not less than 75% of the aggregate marks in all semesters put together, except first year and passes all the above semesters in the first appearance itself and completes all papers including that of first year within the stipulated period of study 3/4 years, without any break.

II) FIRST CLASS:

A candidate will be declared to have passed in First Class if he/ she secures not less than 60% of the aggregate marks in all semesters put together, except first year and completes all papers including that of first year within the stipulated period of study 3/4 years, without any break.

III) SECOND CLASS:

All other successful candidates will be declared to have passed in Second Class. The above mentioned classification is applicable for the Part Time students who pass out final examination from October 2004 onwards (joined in first year in 2000 -2001).

iv) Minimum marks required for a pass in Board examinations

A candidate will be declared to have passed in First Class if he/ she secures not less than 60% of the aggregate marks in all semesters put together, except first year and completes all papers including that of first year within the stipulated period of study 3/4 years, without any break.

v) Revaluation of Examination Papers :

A candidate can apply for revaluation of his/her answer script of any theory paper he/she had appeared, if he/she wishes. Candidates can apply to get xerox copy of answer book on payment of Rs. 100/- per paper through the institution within 10 days from the date of publication of the results. On receipt of xerox copy of answer book one can apply for revaluation by sending a D.D. for Rs. 400 in favour of “The Additional Director of Technical Education (Examinations)” Payable at Chennai.

The candidates who secure increase in marks in the revaluation have to surrender their original mark statement to obtain the revised Mark statement. Those who get lesser marks in revaluation are permitted to retain their original marks.

vii) A student on completion of studies in each Semester should necessarily register himself / herself and appear for the Board Examinations in the Semester.

viii) A student should satisfy the conditions required for the eligibility for the award of Diploma.
